Mag Oxis



Magnesium is one of the 6 major nutrients necessary for crop production. In fact it is quantitatively the third most important nutrient for oil palm after nitrogen and potassium.

Magnesium, is an essential constituent in the formation of chlorophyll which converts light energy into biochemical energy during photosynthesis. It is also the component of a number of enzyme systems that are involved in the synthesis of starch, protein and oil. These provide the energy for the transport of assimilates from leaves to fruit bunches and roots and also improve the absorption of nutrients uptake especially Phosphorous and Potassium.

Studies show that inhibited supply of carbohydrate (induced by Magnesium deficiency) to the fruits directly lead so poor fresh fruit bunch (ffb) yield. Is also reduces the oil content in the ffb.

Causes Of Magnesium Deficiency

Magnesium deficiency may occur in the following situation :
− Soil with low exchangeable Magnesium.
− Very light texture soils especially those on the of ridges and slopes where top soil has been erode.
− Acid sandy soil
− Tanah pasir yang asam.
− Sandy soil that are heavily fertilized with Potassium or Ammonium because they interfere with the uptake of Magnesium.
− Organic soils where large quantity of soluble Calcium (eg. Rock phosphate) is applied.

MAG-OXIS

Currently the most common source of Magnesium is Kieserite (in sulphate form ). This is extremely soluble and highly leachable especially in sandy soil and high rainfall area. The other sources are in the oxide form (eg. Magnesium oxide and fused limestone) and the carbonate form (eg. Magnesite and Dolomite) Oxides and carbonates forms have a very low solubility. They need further acidulation with acid in the soil to convert them to the soluble form. This process takes time and hence the available Magnesium is generally insufficient to meet the immediate demand of the palm.

Mag-Oxis which is in the oxysulphate form, contains both the water soluble sulphate form as well as the partially soluble oxide form. The water soluble form will meet the immediate demand of the palm while the partially soluble oxide form will undergo further acidulation with the acid in the soil to give a sustained release of the soluble sulphate form. The advantage of Mag-Oxis is that it has both corrective and preventive properties.
